Ravenswood began in 1976 with Joel Peterson taking a chance with a grape variety that at the time was very much an underdog, Zinfandel. The first two wines produced from that 1976 harvest were a huge critical success, taking both first and second place at a prestigious San Francisco tasting.

Peterson soon established working relationships with a number of grape growers who shared his commitment and independence. These grape growers now proudly supply Ravenswood for almost every wine they create. This loyalty is shared by Ravenswood's fans who form something of a cult following around these uncompromising wines.
