Pitu Cachaca was first created in 1938 when the Candido Carneiro and Ferrer de Morais families started a company producing vinegar and passion fruit drinks, as well as bottling Brazil's national drink, cachaca.

The name Pitu is taken from the stream which ran through the original plantations. The Pitu freshwater shrimp was abundant in these streams and so the name Pitu was given to the stream, the plantation and to the cachaca itself, as well as serving as the icon for the brand. It also made for a delicious snack to serve to guests at the plantation while enjoying Pitu cachaca.
