Boddingtons Brewery was founded in 1853 by Henry Boddington, taking control of the older Strangeways Brewery which had operated since 1778 after working his way up from a salesman. Boddington worked to grow the brewery, and by 1877 it had become the largest brewery in the North of England.

More recently, Boddingtons has seen popularity with an advertising campaign in the 1990s branding it as "The Cream of Manchester", simultaneously serving to raise the city's image alongside names such as Manchester United and Coronation Street.
