The Japanese style of whisky is heavily influenced by Scotch whisky, starting life as a concerted effort to recreate the style. The idea that Scotch style whisky made elsewhere could not possibly compete has been thoroughly overthrown, though. The modern Japanese approach is to create a hugely diverse range of malts allowing for innovation that puts them at the forefront of the global whisky market.
