Description:
The colour is a deep, vibrant crimson. Blackberry, black pepper, savoury and spice elements are prominent, with meaty overtones. The Viognier has added a lifted aromatic quality.
Multi-layered complexity is the aim. Powerful, bur ripe and round tannins give the wine great structure. Oak ageing plays a minor part and the wine lives on its fruit. Combined with the good acidity, these characteristics mean excellent ageing potential.
Development of mineral, earthy and tarry characters are likely during bottle ageing, resulting in a wine that is distinctly Northern Rhone-like rather than resembling anything Australian.
One look at this wine in a glass tells all - deep, rich and inviting. Trinity Hill is a leading producer of this Rhone-style Syrah, the rising star of wines and perhaps the Gimblett Gravels' signature variety.
The wine was blended after about 14 months oak ageing and bottled in August 2005.
Grape Variety:
97% Syrah, 3% Viognier.
Background:
2004 was an excellent season in Hawke's Bay. A good warm summer, followed by a moist relatively cool February, allowed the vines to come into the ripening period proper in very good shape with a full healthy canopy.
The summer was not very hot, but a very long, dry autumn allowed the grapes to hang on in perfect condition until they were physiologically ripe.
