Description:
Very complex nose with a combination of balsamic aromas, spices and raisiny fruit. Intense, dark colour with just a reddish, iodine-coloured tinge at the rim.
Initial impact of balsamic aroma in the mouth which fades leaving smoothness along the edge and below the tongue, with a slight recollection of tannin on the upper gums and front palate.
In the production of Gran Reserva wines, Riscal uses grapes from old vines over 30 years of age, either from its own production or acquired from reliable local wine growers. Having selected the wine for Gran Reserva, following the unification of the vintage, the wine passes to American oak barrels where it will remain for between two and a half and three years, plus a further three years in bottle before its release onto the market.

Background:
Marqués de Riscal was founded in the 1850s in the small village of Elciego in the Alava region of Rioja. Breaking with tradition, a French winemaker was employed to oversee the introduction of French grape varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon is still planted), French vinification techniques and the construction of a new winery built along Bordeaux lines.
Within five years the Bodega was winning prizes, culminating in the Diplome d'Honneur, the highest accolade at the XIII Exposition de Bordeaux, which it won in 1895.
