Description:
A lifted nose of intense lemon and honeysuckle aromas from the Chardonnay fruit, coupled with fresh strawberries and rose petals from the Pinot Noir.
The years of yeast age have added aromas and flavours of shortbread, brioche and toast to the nose and palate, with a lovely layered texture to the mouth feel. The wine is perfectly balanced with great length of flavour and lovely crisp acidity.
A single vineyard wine with all the classical notes of great Tasmanian sparkling wine.
Winemaking:
2001 was considered good across all Tasmanian regions. In the Pipers River region, a cool, wet Spring was followed by a warm, dry ripening period. This warmth led to an early vintage of good crop levels.
Individual blocks were selected, hand harvested and fermented separately. Select batches underwent barrel fermentation and lees stirring. This, coupled with malolactic fermentation for all wines, has contributed distinctive creaminess and layers to the palate. Four years ageing on yeast lees after the secondary fermentation has given classic yeast complexity to the final wine.
Background Information:
The Heemskerk Vineyard was established in 1975 in the heart of the Pipers River region and is the birthplace of Jansz Tasmania. In 1986, Heemskerk was joined by the esteemed Champagne producer Louis Roederer of Reims, France in their pursuit of the definitive Australian sparkling wine. Louis Roederer shared the belief that the climate of the area - so similar to that of the classic wine regions of Burgundy and Champagne - was ideal for the production of finely structured methode champenoise.
