Description:
Intensely rich and biscuity, yeasty nose. Powerful flavours of toasted nuts, wild fruits and crème brûlée abound, balanced with lively acidity.
La Grand Année develops a majestic vinosity, intense, rich and complex aromas whose tonality varies according to the nature of the vintage.
Grape Variety:
65% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay.
Background:
La Grande Année is Bollinger's Prestige Cuvée and is only produced when exceptional vintages occur. The grapes come exclusively from Grands and Premiers Crus.
For this 1999 vintage, grapes from some 15 Grand and Premier Crus from the Marne departement have gone into the composition. Bollinger use only the ‘cuvée’ juice in the making of La Grande Année.
"Drinking Bollinger is somehow a more serious affair than other Champagnes. It's James Bond's favourite tipple and you get the feeling that while other houses are quite happy to have naked models cavorting around with a bottle of their wares in hand, this would be frowned upon at Bolly HQ. And quite rightly, as frankly what is in the bottle is so good that little else needs to be said. The newly released 1999 Grande Annee is stunning. Bollinger is characterised by its richness and structure and the 1999 doesn't disappoint. Ripe pears, spice, a touch of toffee on the nose, held together by a structured palate. Surprisingly approachable, although will take on extra layers of complexity over the next 10 years."
