It's a new vintage, but it's not a Grande Année. It's a one-off special Champagne called '2003 by Bollinger'. It is a soft and sumptuous Champagne, with a gloriously slow-releasing pin-cushion mousse that feels utterly satisfying in the mouth.



As Ghislain de Montgolfier, President of Bollinger explained "The 2003 harvest was not a Grande Année for Bollinger. However, 2003 did produce something special. So special, in fact, that it was impossible to ignore. Even at Bollinger. But what should we do? We could not release this wine as a Grande Année. Bollinger drinkers would not understand such a change of style. So we are presenting it as '2003 by Bollinger'. We are lifting the curtain on a totally one-off style and saying "Yes, this is 2003" and "Yes this is Bollinger". It is neither superior, nor inferior to Grande Année. It's just different, and we hope the packaging reflects the uniqueness of the product."

Vintage 2003: 2003 will remain forever engraved in the memory of the Champenois as unique in every way. It started under heavy snow and very low temperatures until the very end of February. Without any perceivable transition, Spring showed signs of precocity, a mild weather followed by sudden heat woke up the vines, giving birth to the first buds, especially in the Grands Crus areas.
But the spectacular frosts of the night of April 11th (-11°C) destroyed a large number of them. New buds gradually appeared, generating extremely spread out flowering episodes (from June 2nd to August 15th). June saw extremely violent thunderstorms with hale, which destroyed more buds and flowers... Summer was characterised by the heat wave that everyone remembers all over Europe.

The harvest was historically early (a record since 1822) and finished by August 31st at Bollinger. It turned out to be a very low crop for Bollinger (5.000 kg/ha), as the vineyards, essentially composed of Grands and Premiers Crus, were particularly struck by all the climatic accidents.

Bollinger wanted to celebrate this astonishing year in their own way by producing a very unique and non typical wine in the lineage of Bollinger. They have blended Pinots Noirs from Aÿ and Verzenay together with Chardonnays from Cuis, the Houses’ 3 most historical vineyards, a trilogy for 2003, hence the name '2003 by Bollinger'.
